Day 1 - Do Pay the Ferryman

Day 1 - Friday 25th March

The Spirit was running an hour or so late, so it was a good 2 hours queueing on the pier before we got the car on board and another half hour before we were on deck.

We had a late dinner and a red or 3 and sat down to watch the promising Blues almost beat the Tigers.  T'was a warm night, so spent then some time outside to watch the lights of Melbourne disappear.

OK. We were trying to save a few quid, so we sat up on the boat. Oops. Miight have worked in our 20s, but not in our 50s. In fairness, Ged probablty grabbed 4 hours or so, but Steve didn't sleep a wink. He tried every position, walks on the deck, even sleeping on the floor, but to no avail. Should have paid the ferryman a little bit more and got a cabin.

Day 1 Friday 25th March -  The sunrise was superb, unlike the egg and bacon muffin for breakfast. Luckily the yogurt was edible.

We had a lot of driving ahead, and cognisant of Steve'slack of sleep, we rotated the driving very frequently. Four hours all up and pretty hard going.

First stop was the batman bridge on the Tamar. Impressive.

We had hoped to discover lots of food and wine along the way, but being Good Friday, we weren't overwelmed with choice. Grabbed a bottle of Cab Sav from Winterbrook and headed to Pipers Brook for lunch. Arrived in St Helens mid afternoon. This is a lovely fishing town.

The hotel was dated, but clean and friendly. Ate at the hotel (Scallop and Prawn Taglitali), chatted to some Sydney folk who were touring on their motortrike and hit the hay.

  1. Seems the ships decor update didn't help with better food then ? Very sad always been an overpriced limited choice of extraordinarily dull food and a rubbish wine list. Such an opportunity lost. I hear you on the chairs better than a plane but yeah good sleep is tricky. Love the the bridge pic.
